Receptor design
The calcitriol receptor, also known as vitamin D receptor or as NR1I1, is a nuclear receptor that activates some transcription factors.
After being activated by calcitriol, the receptor forms a heterodimer with retinoid X receptor (RXR) and binds the DNA response modulus modulating the expression of a specific gene.
In humans, the calcitriol receptor is encoded by a gene named VDR gene, while the DNA sequence to which the VDR-calcitriol-RXR complex binds is called VDRE (Vitamin D Responsive Element). In particular, enterocytes are stimulated to produce a calcium conveyor (TRPV6) and a calcium-intracellular protein.
The receptor activity in cells is to modulate calcium levels in the body.
