D. Stempel AG (briefly 'Stempel') was a German typewriter in Frankfurt, founded on January 15, 1895 by David Stempel (1869-1927).
Initially, the company was a supplier of components and materials for printing presses. Then it took over the production of the Juxberg-Rust, founded in 1858, from Offenbach.
In 1900, Stempel acquired exclusive rights to fabricate lettering for Linotype GmbH, the European branch of Mergenthaler Linotype Company. Meanwhile, Linotype acquired an ever-increasing share.
Walter Cunz led the foundry from the end of the Second World War to the late sixties, making the company with its collection as a leader, thanks to brilliant letter designers like Hermann Zapf. He arranged shares in Haas'sche Schriftgiesserei, the collection of Klingspor foundry, and some Weber fonts.
Only in 1977, Stamp started typing for photo sets, much later than competitors.
The last Linotype dies were made in 1983. In the beginning of 1985 Stempel was completely incorporated in Linotype GmbH.
