François Nicolaas Fagel


Francois-Nicolaas Fagel François Nicolaas des H.R.Rijksbaron Fagel (Died Nijmegen, February 3, 1655 - Sluis, February 23, 1718) was a Lieutenant-Field Marshal in the service of the Habsburg Netherlands. He was especially active in the field of contemporary Belgium, northern France with a trip to Portugal. He was elevated by Emperor Leopold I to Baron of the Holy Roman Empire.

François-Nicolaas Fagel was a member of the Fagel family, a son of Nicolaes Fagel (1620-1695), Nijmegen's ships and mayor and Elisabeth Robbé († 1689), and a cousin of former Dutch board guest Gaspar Fagel. He distinguished himself in 1690 in the nineteen-year War at the battle of Fleurus against the French. In 1691 he was commander at the defense of Bergen and in 1695 at the siege of Namur.

In the Spanish Succession War he conducted the command during Lieutenant's attack in October 1702 as Lieutenant General. In 1703 he led the siege of Bonn. On June 30th, 1703, he fought at Ekeren.

Then Fagel was added to the Portuguese army. In the 1705 campaign he changed the command daily with Henri de Massue. He took Valencia and Albuquerque and continued the siege of Badajoz.

After returning to the Netherlands in 1709, he had ordered the siege of Tournai and fought in the battlefields of the Ramillies and Malplaquet. He conquered Béthune and reached in 1711 the surrender of the fortress of Bouchain. In 1712 he succeeded in crossing the Schelde and conquered the fort of Le Quesnoy. He died in the rank of General of the Infantry in the service of the States General of the Seven United Netherlands.
