Georges Lentz

Georges Lentz (Luxembourg, October 22, 1965) is a Luxembourg composer who lives in Australia since 1990.

Life and work

Lentz studied music at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique in Paris (1982-1986) and at the Musikhochschule in Hannover (1986-1990). He has lived in Australia since 1990 and leads to a somewhat retrenched existence. From 1989 he writes the monumental work "Caeli enarrant ...", a large cycle of compositions in which each composition is as a chapter of the larger cycle formed by the whole. The meaning of "Caeli enarrant ..." is, on the one hand, the reflection of the composers enchantment with astronomy, but also his mental thoughts and doubts. One of the most important topics in his music is the problem of existential loneliness.

His compositions are receiving more and more international recognition, and his orchestral works are played by major orchestras (Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonieorchester Berlin, Guerzenich-Orchester Koeln, Halle Orchestra Manchester, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony, New Japan Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony ...). His final composition is Monh, a concert for viola, orchestra and electronics, written for the well-known German soloist Tabea Zimmermann and repeatedly played by her since 2005.

Georges Lentz is considered a very self-critical person and he rarely writes new compositions or assignments. He apparently retires to a monastery or to the Australian desert to find inspiration and write. He does not make any calls.

All his works have been published by Universal Edition in Vienna. Working "The heavens declare ..." (1989 tot nu toe)
