Patrick Grundy

Patrick Michael Grundy (Yarmouth, November 16, 1917 - 1959) was an English mathematician.

Known primarily for the Sprague-Grundy theorem, uncovered by the two authors, with whom in 1939 introduced the concept of Grundy's number, showing that any unbiased game, under normal playing conditions, is equivalent to a number of Grundy. In 1936 he entered Clare College, Cambridge, where he distinguished himself in the Mathematical Tripos. In 1939 he became Cambridge's researcher of algebraic geometry, publishing some work on module theory and integrity domains. In 1942 he was admitted to the London Mathematical Society, whose next year he will become "Assistant Lectureur" of math at the University of Hull, which will leave the following year due to the war, and will start his Ph.D. in Cambridge.
