Although there is no certainty, Guillelmus is considered to be a cousin of Gregorius X. Before taking up a church position, Guillelmus was married and had two children. After the death of his wife, he joined the church, becoming the first function of Barjols. In 1241 he became a canonist of Clermont's cathedral chapter. On behalf of the Count of Provence, he acted as ambassador in both Genoa and Avignon.
On July 22, 1257, Guillelmus was elected Archbishop of Aix. He would fulfill this position until his elevation to Palestine's Cardinal Bishop on June 3, 1273. In 1275 he was appointed as Dean of the College of Cardinals.
Guillelmus participated in all three conclaves that took place in 1276. During the last conclave in August-September, he was chosen as a pope on September 5, intending to adopt the name Gregorius XI. A few hours after his election, Giullelmus died and because he was never publicly proclaimed until Pope lacks his name in the official list of popes.
Vicedominus de Vicedominis died on 6 September 1276 in Viterbo and was buried there in the San Francesco church.
