A club is a private organization focused on non-economic goals. Because new members are admitted only after ballotage, a club is more exclusive than other associations.
Modern clubs originated in the English coffee houses of the sixteenth century. These clubs had a social and political impact. During the French Revolution, clubs emerged like those of the Jacobs, the Gourdines, the Feuillants and the Cordeliers. In the nineteenth century the emphasis was more on the social side and sports clubs were created.
