Enterobacter

Enterobacter is a genus of optional asporigenic and anaerobic Gram negative bacteria. They are able to use lactose and citrates, thus producing β-galactosidase and citrate. They are negative to the test of the methyl red and positive to the Voges-Proskauer test, then make 2,3-butylglyccharide fermentation. They are very similar to Klebsiella, but they differ in their mobility and production of Ornithine-decarboxylase. They are part of the group of coliforms.

They are normally present in the intestines of humans as diners, but in immunodeficient subjects (typically hospitalized) they manifest a pathogenicity that can cause urinary tract infections.
