Gijsbert of Bronckhorst-Batenburg (? - beheaded, Brussels, June 1, 1568) was a nobleman from an old Gelders gender (12th century). His parents were Herman van Bronckhorst (-1556) and Petronella van Praet and Moerkercken (-1594).
Gijsbert, along with his brother Dirk, played an important role during the eighties war. Both of them were members of the Compromise and after reaching Austruweel (March 13, 1567) came to Amsterdam to meet their cousin Hendrik van Brederode, but it had already left. They then resigned to East Friesland, were betrayed by the skipper, arrested by Harlingen, sentenced to death by the Council of Beroerten and Brussels beheaded.
A song recorded in the Geuzenlied Book from that time recalls: Ghy Christian allegare, What did you do, All of a sad Nieumare, That Thantwerpen is shaking: Daer is so sorry for Christ's sorrow, All of God's wrath and otherwise not, A menighing burgher, Do the Prince track out of town.
There are still a couple of couplets. Also see Literature
