A KdF folder
Kraft durch Freude (KdF), a government-led organization in Nazi Germany, who earned good work performance with trips and vacations. KdF was a part of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (DAF), the national German labor organization.
From 1933, KdF provided workers with affordable leisure activities, such as concerts, day trips and vacations - for example in Prora on Rügen. Great ships were built especially for KdF cruises, such as the Wilhelm Gustloff.
KdF also started producing an affordable car, the KdF-Wagen - later known as Volkswagen Beetle. For the production of the cars and the housing of the workers involved, Fallersleben built a new city called KdF-Stadt (the present Wolfsburg). KdF organized a special savings system so that ordinary workers could afford the luxury of a car. Because of the outbreak of World War II, this was very unjustified.
During the war, KdF was engaged in the German war effort. The car factory built the Kübelwagen and the Schwimm car, among other things; The Wilhelm Gustloff was deployed as a hospital ship and as accommodation for U-boat crews; and the huge spa hotel in Rügen was used as an emergency hospital and for temporary housing for civilians who had escaped the bombings in Hamburg.
Between 1936 and 1939, the KdF organization was also used to disguise German volunteers for the Legion Condor as workers to ship to Spain.
