Delaware bay
The Delaware Bay, located on the northeastern coast of the United States, is the major estuary mouth of the Delaware River, where the sweet river waters blend over many miles with the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The area covers 2,030 square kilometers.
The bay is bordered by the states of New Jersey and Delaware. The two Delaware capes, which mark the extreme boundary of the bay and the Atlantic Ocean, are Cape May and Cape Henlopen.
The banks of the bay consist largely of salt marshes and swallows. Only small communities inhabit the shore of the lower bay. Several of the rivers have a protected status due to the unique lakes of the Baltic Sea along the coast of the bay. The bay acts as a breeding ground for many marine species, including dung crabs. The bay is also a prominent oyster land.
