Peter van Diest

Peter van Diest (1454-1507) was a Flemish writer, who is attributed to the writing of the medieval drama Elckerlijc.

Elckerlijc, which can be translated into the Italian language as the common man, has arrived to this day in the form of a manuscript, in which the author's name was not mentioned. A Latin translation of 1539 by Georgius Macropedius, however, states that the original author is a certain Petrus Diesthemius ('Peter von Diest'). Little else is known about the writer.

He was identified with the Carthusian monk Petrus Dorlandus (1454-1507), who lived in Diest (the present Belgium) and wrote the lives of the saints. This identification, however, is controversial among philologists.
