The story focuses on several people, whose infamous Logen Negenfinger is the most important. He is the Hero of the Union, whose happiness seems to end at last. The former sword master Glokta, who is now crippled and martyr for the powerful Inquisition, plays an important role in the deepest foundations of the Union. And then there is Bayaz, who gets the chance to become the First of Magicians, but decides to help Log in his fight against the cruel King of the North, Bethod, who wants to drive the whole Union on its swing.
