Amaethon or Amathaon (Welsh "Great Arbitrator") was a son of Dôn and an alleged agricultural goddess. Fontimodifica wikitesto
The main to Amaethon appears in the Welsh mediaeval prose Culhwch and Olwen. In one of the impossible tests that Culhwch has to end up having Olwen's hand, Amaethon is the only man who can plow some soil. In the dark Welsh poem Cad Goddeu a possible refers to Amaethon / Amathaon, but the passage is obscure. One possible interpretation is that he steals a dog, a lapwing and a roe deer at Arawn, king of Annwn (the Oltretomba), creating a battle between Arawn and Dôn's sons. Gwydion uses his magic stick to convey trees in warriors and help Dôn's sons win.
In one of the triads invented by Iolo Morganwg, Amaethon teaches magic to his brother Gwydion (this triad is considered false). Etimologiamodifica wikitesto
The theorem Amaethon can be derived from the proto-Celtic * Ambaxtonos ("Big Planner"), an enhancing form of ambactos (from * ambhi-ag-to-). But it can also derive from the Welsh amaeth ("agriculture").
