General Catalogue of Variable Stars

The General Catalog of Variable Stars (abbreviated in GCVS) is a variable star catalog. Its first edition was published in 1948 by the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and contained 10,820 stars. The second and third editions were published respectively in 1958 and 1968; a fourth edition, in three volumes, was published in 1985-1987 and contained 28,435 stars. A fourth volume of this fourth edition containing the table was later published, as well as a fifth volume to catalog variable stars discovered outside the Milky Way.

The most up-to-date version of the catalog is available on the official site; contains updated coordinates for the variable stars shown in the fourth edition, plus the ones most recently discovered. An older version, dated 2004, is available from the VizieR service at the Center de Données Astronomie de Strasbourg by the name of Combined General Catalog of Variable Stars (GCVS4.2; VizieR database number II / 250).
