Ypsilanti, also called Ypsilantis (Greek: Υψηλάντης, Romanian: Ipsilanti) or Hypsilanti, is a Greek family belonging to the Fanarians claiming to descend from the Comnenen. The Ypsilanti were an influential family within the Ottoman Empire, especially in the 18th and 19th centuries. The origin of family lies in the Pontic community of Ypsil (Arpaözü) in the district of Kadahor (Çaykara), east of Trabzon. In the 19th century, the family financed Greek education in this region. Several members of this gender were drogman and hospodar of rulers in the Balkans such as Moldova and Walachia. Others played a role in the Greek Independence War against the Ottoman Empire.
