The group phase of the KNVB cup season 1998/99 took place between 11 August and 2 September 1998. There were thirteen groups with four clubs, except groups 1, 7 and 13 consisting of five clubs. The numbers one and two of each group went on to the next round. Each club played three games (the clubs in groups 1, 7 and 13 played four), the lottery determined who played at home or out many times and against any opponent.
