In the Gallo-Roman era, Compiègne was a point of passage on the Oise (Isara) connected to the network of secondary roads at the border of Bellovaci (Beauvais) and Suisse (Soissons). The passage was at the place known as "the closed of the roses". Compiègne was called Compendium, that is, "shortcut".

In the current city center, the excavations did not reveal Galloromanian remains. You will find the remains of some villa in the area, especially the position of the ford (certainly a military building). Compiègne has been joined to the Crown of France since the arrival of Meroving. Societàmodifica wikitesto Demographic evolution modifies wikitesto
