The International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators (IAATO) is an organization that advocates the proper implementation of safe, environmentally friendly and private travel (including cruises) to Antarctica, and also promotes it.
HistoryThe first ship specifically built as a passenger ship and extra fortified against ice was the m / v Lindblad Explorer, built in 1969. This resulted in the so-called "Expedition Cruising" that would link the cruise industry to education.
The IAATO was founded in 1991 by 7 tour organizations that were already active in organizing expeditions and cruises with destination Antarctica. These 7 organizations consisted of 6 operators with 10 expedition ships and 1 operator on land for activities in Antarctica itself.
The organization's 2 main drivers are: IAATO today
Today, IAATO includes more than 100 members including ship operators, land operators, shipping agents, travel agencies, travel agents, etc. This industry group has decided to set up the highest possible tourism standards in its effort to protect Antarctica. The purpose of this organization is to create industry within the parameters of the Antarctic Treaty system, the International Maritime Organization Conventions and the same international and national laws and agreements.
The IAATO members meet in June or May once a year. The members of the IAATO Committee are elected at this annual meeting. All members are invited to attend the open sessions of this annual meeting. Sources
