Johannes Wtenbogaert, or Johannes Uytenbogaert, (Utrecht, 1557 - The Hague, 1644) was a Dutch preacher and prose writer of the Golden Age. biography
Wtenbogaert was born as son of August Wtenbogaert. He became minister in Utrecht in 1584 and in 1591 in The Hague. Wtenbogaert was an important church figure in his time. Not only was he the prince of Mauritian court predictor, he was also a leader in submitting the Remonstrant of 1610. One of the protest items deposited with the States General was that diversity in religious beliefs should be possible.
In the twelve-year-old, he became in conflict with the contraremonious prince Maurits and fell in disgrace. After the detention of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt in 1618 he fled the country. In 1626, after the death of Prince Maurits, he returned to the Netherlands, where he became a minister. He was the patron of painter and draftsman Jan Lievens, who also painted him. He died at the age of 87 in The Hague.
