Luigi Capotosti


Luigi Capotosti (Monte Giberto, February 23, 1863 - Rome, February 16, 1938) was an Italian religious and cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Capotosti studied the Fermo seminar and was priest in 1885. He then served as personal secretary of the bishop of Fermo, as a professor at the seminar and as a canon of the cathedral chapter there. On April 8, 1906, Pope Pius X appointed him as bishop of Modigliana. Pope Pius XI took him to Rome in 1914, where he became Secretary of the Congregation for the Sacrament Discipline. He became Titular Archbishop of Thermae Basilica in 1915.

During the consistory of June 21, 1926, Pius XI created him cardinal. He received the San Pietro in Vincoli as the title church. In 1931, he became the first pro-date and in 1933 datarius.

Cardinal Capotosti died at the age of 74 and was buried at Campo Verano.
