The Ossewabrandwag (also spelled as Ossewa Brandwag) is the name of a fascist and extremely-nationalist organization of Afrikaners who oppose British imperialism. The Ossewabrandwag was founded in 1939. The name was derived from the cartoons (Grote Trek) that took place a hundred years before, and at that time some of the months before, the symbolic Ossewatrek had taken place as a major commemoration of the Trek.
Initially, the Ossewabrandwag was a cultural organization, but eventually became militant and paramilitary. The Gryshemde Division was held responsible for team team activities and sabotage actions. The leadership of the Ossewabrandwag was in the hands of 'Commander General' J.F.J. van Rensburg, the pro-national socialist wax. Through the national socialist views of Van Rensburg, the movement was in conflict with Daniel François Malan, the leader of the National Party. When Malan expressed himself openly to the Ossewabrandwag, most Afrikaner nationalists chose Malan's side.
In September 1942, the Ossewabrandwag was forbidden by Prime Minister Jan Christian Smuts. Some of her leaders, including B.J. Vorster - the later state president - was imprisoned. The movement remained active for some years, but disappeared during the 1950s. Literature Also see
