Rails (magazine)

Cover of Rails, September 2006

Rails was a monthly magazine of Dutch Railways, which was spread free of charge on Dutch trains. The magazine was intended for travelers as a service to spend the travel time.

The first edition appeared in 1951, still under the title Between the rails. In addition to a number of pages on the railways itself, the magazine consisted of stories, reports and backgrounds on a variety of topics.

In 1989, the new name, Rails, was introduced. The monthly magazine was renewed and was characterized by an extravagant-looking layout, photoreportages and sections such as "heartbeats" (with calls), daydreaming, interviews and columns. Many expenses were built around a central theme. In addition, there was room for announcements about the railways themselves.

The leaf was spread once a month and was loosely placed in the luggage rack and therefore not hung in a hook like Belgium in Belgium. It was emphatically not the intention to bring the magazine and there was therefore on the front of the magazine the message "Do not take home home" and later Rails belong in the train. Nevertheless, magazines were regularly taken home, which meant that fewer copies were taken in the course of the month. Sometimes new copies were distributed in the course of the month, but often not. Due to the arrival of the free newspapers, interest was reduced because travelers had an alternative and the free newspapers were frequently on the trains.

The magazine was discontinued in 2008, because NS found that it did not end with the general public traveling with the train.
