The succentor (from the Latin succentor, "one who sings for a second") in the ancient cathedrals was the one who sang the psalms, the precursors and the responses after the precenture. In English cathedrals today the priest responsible for liturgy and music is normally the precenture, but some of them, such as the Sao Paulo Cathedral in London and the Durham Cathedral, still have a succentor.
