Tarjei Vesaas (Vinje, 1897 - 1970) was a Norwegian poet and novelist. Vesaas wrote in the nynorsk, one of Norway's official languages.

Vesaas became most famous by his novels Fuglane (1957) and Is Castle (1963). Fuglane is the story of Mattis, who can not find his way into the mature world and seeks protection in nature. Is Castle is a novel about the deep friendship between the girls Siss and Unn. When Unn dies by being caught in a frozen waterfall, Siss feels very lonely and decides to isolate from the other children at school, just as Unn did before she died.

The ice castle appeared in 1979 in Dutch translation at Agathon in Bussum publishing house (entitled The Ice Castle). In 1981, the same publishing house followed the translation of Fuglane (The Birds). Both books are available only antiquarianly. Van Is Castle was made by Per Blom in 1987.
