Publishing and Printing The Spaarnestad was a Dutch catholic publishing house and printing company in Haarlem, founded in 1906, as one of the main editions of the journal Catholic Illustration. Frans van de Griendt became one of the first directors of De Spaarnestad. Later directors were among others C.P. Ooms, J.W. Lucas and Dr. Ir. H.J.A. (Hans) de Goeij. After the First World War there was also a branch of De Spaarnestad in Brussels.
The Catholic Illustration, published since 1867, was the illustrated weekly magazine for Catholic families until 1968. The magazine appeared at De Spaarnestad from 1910. Well-known employees were the illustrators Herman Moerkerk, Frans Lammers and Beb Reith (1894-1974). Lammers was also known as the coverwriter of the youth book series Pim Pandoer. Reith wrote and recorded the monki's monkeys in the Monki's Tour around the World series.
Dr. Ir. H.J.A. (Hans) de Goeij (1908-1994) was connected to De Spaarnestad from 1932. He started there as the first business engineer. After the war he became Deputy Director and then Director of De Spaarnestad. The printing company was later broken down and moved to the Waarderpolder in Haarlem. Prior to that in 1957, a deep printing company, De Spaarnestad, was located in Etten-Leur under his leadership. This establishment is now a part of Roto Smeets in Etten-Leur.
Printing and Publishing The Spaarnestad merged with Cebemij in 's-Hertogenbosch in 1964 (mid 1965 final merger) to the VNU, United Dutch Publishers, from 1999 further under the acronym VNU. From 2007, VNU continued under the name The Nielsen Company. The name De Spaarnestad still lives in the famous photo archive of this former Haarlem Publishing and Printing Company: Spaarnestad Photo.
In the period of The Spaarnestad and United Dutch Publishers, the Catholic newspaper De Tijd was published (translated into a weekly magazine in 1974) and, besides commercial printing and books, well-known magazines were published, in addition to the Catholic Illustration also Panorama, Libelle, Beatrey, Revu, Margriet, Story, Cosmopolitan, as well as children's books, as well as youth magazines and comic books, such as Tattoo, Okki, Billie Turf, Sjors and Sjimmie, Donald Duck, Tina, Winnetou, Asterix and Obelix and Tintin.
The former publishing house The Spaarnestad, as one of the largest publishers of illustrated magazines in the Netherlands, had spent long time exclusive agreements with ABC Press Service on the placement of reports by the often famous foreign photographers representing the agency. < / p>
All parts of the VNU, the publishing house De Spaarnestad, the printing company De Spaarnestad, the Dutch Rotogravure Society, the headquarters of the United Dutch Publishers companies were lifted, sold, merged and left in 1965. What ever was the largest publishing house in the Netherlands has been part of Sanoma Media, based in Hoofddorp since 2001.
