Education Act of 1857


The Education Act of 1857 was a Dutch law of 1857 that attempted to end the school struggle between public and special education proponents, created by the Education Act of 1806. The law was proposed by Van Rappard. This Act regulates that public education is subsidized only. Education at public schools should be accessible to children of any religious mindset and education should be neutral.

This law is for the first time stipulated in the Netherlands in which subjects primary education should be given.

There were four types of schools: the Armenschool, the Herhalingsschool, the Secondary School for especially middle school children and the First Burgerschool for the better located. Outside of the rehabilitation school they were for boys and girls, who were separated from each other.
