Jeongjo of Joseon

King Jeongjo, born as Yi San, was the twenty-second king ruling over the Jose dynasty in Korea. He was the son of Prince Sado and grandson of his predecessor King Yeongjo. His father was killed by Jeongjo's grandfather because of his misdemeanors at the court. Jeongjo was a successful ruler with a vision; together with Sejong the Great, he is seen as one of the best kings who knew the Jose Monarchy.

Jeongjo's reforms brought him into contact with Hong Guk-yeong, a controversial politician who first attempted to increase King's power but later estimated an attack on King's life.

During his government, Jeongjo invested a lot of time in purifying his father's name. He moved the government to the city of Suwon to be closer to his father's grave and specifically built a fortress to guard the grave called Hwaseong.

In 1776, at the beginning of his government, Jeongjo founded the royal library Kyujanggak. The library was located in the Changdeokgung Palace in Seoul.

Jeongjo died in 1800 quite suddenly and his death was surrounded by mysteries. He was buried in Hwaseong. Full postume name
