Screaming Dead was a gothic rock or punk rock band from Cheltenham, founded in 1980 and lifted in 1985. It was again active between 1997 and 1999. The style is usually characterized as horrorpunk.
OccupationIn 1980, the usual term for gothic rock was still 'positive punk'; founder and guitarist of the 'punk group' was Tony McKormack. He used to be singer Sam Bignall, who was originally singer of a group called The Waste. The bass player became Mal Page and drummer Mark Ogilvie. Their democracy sold well, and the initial local popularity of the group spread through reviews in various magazines, such as Rising Free. Their first official edition was the album Children of the Boneyard Stones, released in 1982 and only on cassette; This album featured a badge and a copy of Warcry, the fanzine who founded the group.
Their first single on vinyl, Valley of the Dead, was funded by themselves and released on their own Skull Records label; however, all copies were sold out within one week, on which the single was taken over by the No Future label. With the 12-inch single Night Creatures of 1983, the group reached 22 in the UK Indie Charts.
In 1984, Screaming Dead released a cover of Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones, in tribute to Brian Jones, who is buried in Cheltenham. In that year, Nick Upton was attracted as a saxophonist, to whom the group was inspired by X-Ray Spex. Their last two albums were released by Nine Mile Records, but the change of style did not affect all fans. In 1985 Screaming Dead broke out.
Tony MacKormack and his wife Candia Ridley founded the pagan rock group Inkubus Sukkubus in 1989. In 1997, it became a reunion of Screaming Dead, albeit without Ogilvie and Upton. In this performance they released the Death Rides Out album and they recorded two tours by Germany. Finally, in 1999 the group broke down again.
Although Screaming Dead was described as gothic by the press, singer Bignall held that it was a punk rock group with an interest in horror themes. Discography Albums Singles, ep’s
