Stomatitis


Stomatitis is the name given to a general inflammation of the oral mucosa.

The cause can be very varied, or unknown as with stomatitis aphthosa. Usually it is an inflammation of viral origin such as stomatitis herpetica. A stomatitis can also be caused by bacteria or fungi. Directions

Irritation due to inappropriate dental prosthesis, or allergy to artificial resins used in dentures may cause stomatitis. Also, certain medications such as antibiotics and cytostatics may disrupt the mouth flora causing inflammation. Finally, diseases such as leukemia, diabetes, xerostomy and microcytic anemia may aggravate the oral mucosa and make it susceptible to inflammation. Prevention
