Abner

Disambiguation - If you are looking for the male name, see Abner (name).

Abner (from Hebrew "his father is light"; ... - ...) is a biblical character.

Son of Ner, cousin and chief of the army of King Saul. It remained the kingdom of Israel to their son, Isbaal. Abner became important, both militarily and politically, after King Saul's death as Isboseth was weak and the real head of the kingdom was Abner. Abner also intended to subject the kingdom of Judah to David, but failed his first attempt, losing Gabaon's battle against the army of Judah commanded by Joab. Isboseth offended him for the sake of a woman, and Abner went to the side of David, who received him with honor, but Joab, jealous of him, betrayed him treacherously (II Samuel: 3,27).
