Frank Round

Frank Eric Round (1927) is a British physicologist specializing in ecology and systematics of diatoms.

In 1948, he obtained his M.Sc. at the University of Birmingham. He obtained a Ph.D. with research on the ecology of benthic freshwater algae. Round had appointments at the University of Liverpool and the University of Birmingham. Throughout most of his academic career, Round was active at the University of Bristol. He was professor from 1979 until 1987, after which he went out of the question.

Round built a large collection of specimens, scientific literature and pictures of diatoms. This collection was highly regarded internationally. In 2006 he donated this collection to the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Round has more than 170 publications on its name, whose books The Ecology of Algae (1981) and The Diatoms: Biology and Morphology of the Genera (1990, together with former students M. Crawford and David G. Mann) as standard work are seen.

Round was one of the founders of the International Society for Diatom Research. He became the editor of the scientific journal of this organization: Diatom Research. In addition to the chairmanship of this organization, he was also chairman of the British Phycological Society.

In 1994, Round received its Linnean Medal from the Linnean Society of London due to its earnings for botany.
