Golkar (fully: Partai Golongan Karya, party of functional groups) is a political party in Indonesia. Golkar was the ruling political party during the Soharto regime (1966-1998). It was also the ruling party during the presidency of Habibie (1998-1999) and it was part of the government coalition during the presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) (2004-2009). Also during the second president's term of SBY in 2009, Golkar, chaired by Chairman Aburizal Bakrie, was part of the coalition. History

Golkar was founded in 1964 under the name Sekber Golkar (Secretariat Bersama Golongan Karya, Joint Secretariat of Functional Groups), as a partnership of professional organizations, trade unions, entrepreneurship organizations, etc. Under the rule of President Suharto, Golkar was transformed from 1968 into a government party dominated by high soldiers. After the fall of Soeharto in 1998, Golkar became a regular political party with internal elections of presidents and candidates.
