Golkar (fully: Partai Golongan Karya, party of functional groups) is a political party in Indonesia. Golkar was the ruling political party during the Soharto regime (1966-1998). It was also the ruling party during the presidency of Habibie (1998-1999) and it was part of the government coalition during the presidency of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) (2004-2009). Golkar was founded in 1964 under the name Sekber Golkar (Secretariat Bersama Golongan Karya, Joint Secretariat of Functional Groups), as a partnership of professional organizations, trade unions, entrepreneurship organizations, etc. Under the rule of President Suharto, Golkar was transformed from 1968 into a government party dominated by high soldiers. After the fall of Soeharto in 1998, Golkar became a regular political party with internal elections of presidents and candidates.
