High School
The Abitur, of Latin abire = leaving, or Abi alone, is in Germany at the end of the Gymnasium, the school comparing to general secondary education in Flanders and VWO in the Netherlands. To start a study at the university or college in Germany, someone must have reached Abitur. It corresponds to the examinations for the exam committee in Flanders and the final exam in the Netherlands.
The Abitur applies to general education. The exam in Germany, which students do at the end of vocational training, is the Fachgebundene Hochschulreife.
