Juan de Silva

Juan de Silva (Trujillo,? - Malakka, April 19, 1616) was Spanish colonial rule and knight in the order of Saint Jacob. Da Silva was Governor General of the Philippines from 1609 to 1616, a period in which the Spanish colony in the Philippines was increasingly threatened by the Dutch.

The Silva arrived in the Philippines in April 1906 as successor to Governor General Rodrigo de Vivero and Aberrucia. He brought six companies to reinforcements. In 1610 a Dutch navy led by Vice-Admiral François de Wittert arrived in Manila. The fleet left Texel on December 22, 1607, blocked Manilla Bay for six months and succeeded during that period to spoil many Chinese merchant ships. At the end of April, De Silva managed to surprise the ships of De Wittert with a fast-built fleet. The flagship De Amsterdam was destroyed and De Wittert came to life. The victory made De Silva a rich man. He received a fifth of the proceeds worth more than two hundred thousand Spanish peso

However, Silva's health put him down. He had already been in poor health for several years and had already requested the Spanish king a number of times to be replaced. During the expedition he got high fever and on April 19, 1616 he died. His body was embalmed and brought back to Manilla by the expedition, led by Alonso Enriquez.

After the governor's death, Manila's Audiencia took over the daily administration of the colony and Jerónimo de Silva, an uncle of Juan, was appointed interim governor. In the summer of 1618 the new governor Alons Fajardo arrived y Tenza.
