VU & ID was a political cooperation between the Flemish Nationalist Union and the political renewal movement, founded by Bert Anciaux in 1997. History
The co-operation took place as a single electoral list in 1999 and after the election victory in the Flemish government Dewael. The remaining coalition partners VLD, SP and Agalev. The cooperation was in tune with the Volunteer Union in 2001.
The partnership was (like iD21 itself) a mental child of Bert Anciaux. After the 1999 elections, an ever-growing group in the Volksunion, including the new party chairman Geert Bourgeois, was skeptical about iD21 as an independent movement and eventually wished a full merger with the party or otherwise a separation of the roads. The collaborative issue has sharpened the under discussion of ongoing political debate that the Volksunion had to launch and thus contributed to the breakdown of the party.
