Andrzej Przewoźnik

Andrzej Przewoźnik

Andrzej Jan Przewoźnik (May 13, 1963 - Pechersk at Smolensk, April 10, 2010) was a Polish historian.

Przewoźnik studied history at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and later pursued a postgraduate degree at the Academy of Lands Defense (Polish: Akademia Obrony Narodowej).

From 1 September 1992 until his death, he was Secretary General of the Polish Council for the Protection of Battle and Martyrs (Polish: Rada Ochrony Pamięci Walk i Męczeństwa). He was also editor of the historical journal Niepodległości.

In a successful attempt to become director of the Polish Institute of National Remembrance (Polish: Instytut Pamięci Narodowej, IPN), Przewoźnik was accused of patronage at the time of the communist dictatorship of the secret police (the Służba Bezpieczeństwa). Although the judge ruled that the documents did not provide evidence, the appointment went on to his nose and became fellow historian Janusz Kurtyka director.

Like the latter, Andrzej Przewoźnik came to life at the Smolensk flight at the age of 46. They belonged to the 96 occupants of the Polish government apparatus that was commemorating Katyn's massacre to Russia, and all died at the failed landing near Smolensk.
