CSS Albemarle

CSS Albemarle

The CSS Albemarle was a navy of the Confederate States of America during the US Civil War.

The construction of the CSS Albemarle occurred in a corn field at Edwards Ferry in the state of North Carolina in 1863. The ship was 152 feet long and was propelled by two 220 hp engines. Her armament consisted of two guns and a steel ram. The Albemarle played a crucial role in the conquest of Plymouth (North Carolina) on 17-20 April 1864 by killing an enemy ship and hunting some others. On October 27, 1864, the Albemarle was buried by an enemy torpedo on the Roanoke River (a river in the states of Virginia and North Carolina). Four days later, Plymouth was again in Northern hands.
