Hugo Biets


Hugo Biets (Broekom, December 13, 1947) is a municipal politician in Tongeren.

In 1988, 1994, 2000, 2006 and 2012, he was elected municipal councilor. Following the municipal elections in 1988, he was chairman of the social housing company Tongershuis in June 1989 (until December 1991). In December 1991 he became president of the OCMW and in January 1992 chairman of the General Hospital Vesalius. Following the 1995 municipal council elections, he became a leader of the VLD and again chairman of the Tongershuis.

In August 1999, in replacement of Patrick Dewael, becoming the prime minister, he became a member of the Tongerse Ship College as ships of education and culture. After the 2000 elections, he again became ships, this time with education, culture, tourism and the chairmanship of De Velinx as main competences. Six years later, he was appointed as a shipowner for finance, environment, agriculture and housing policy. From 21 December 2009 to 6 July 2010, he was also acting mayor in replacement of the chairman of the House of Representatives Patrick Dewael. In October 2006 he was also elected provincial councilor of Limburg.

Following the municipal elections in October 2012, he became chairman of the city council.
