Season

Dupont season

Saison is a beer that originates in the Belgian province of Hainaut.

Saison is the French word for season because it was a seasonal beer. This beer was originally brewed by the farmers in winter to be drunk by seasonal workers in the harvest season. One had to brew in winter to prevent the beer from getting bad during storage. These beers had an alcohol percentage around 3% and were extra hops for shelf life. Today's saison beers are brewed throughout the year and not only in Wallonia. Most beers are gold-blonde to amber-colored unfiltered high fermentation beers and have an alcohol percentage between 5% and 6.5%. Some well-known examples: Saison Dupont, Saison 1900, Saison d'Epeautre, Saison de Pipaix. Criteria

The saison brothers have set out the criteria that they think must satisfy saison beers. But the beer may deviate from 2 points (which means that a Saison can be brewed outside of Hainaut).
