The story, written by Eduardo Mendoza, is set in Barcelona where the protagonist, who does not reveal his name, is imprisoned in a criminal asylum. Judge healed by the doctor who cares for him, is contacted by Commissioner Flores to investigate on a case: a nun's institution has disappeared a little girl.

The protagonist comes out of the asylum and begins to investigate. She finds the sister who is a prostitute knowing a Swedish man who seems very weird. After stealing things on the metro, he takes a room where he finds himself the Swede who dies in front of his eyes. She runs away from the window for fear of being blamed and returns to her sister. After escaping for a fleece to the police, she was disguised as an old man at the institute. Spending on one of the doctors in his asylum questions the gardener of the institute and finds that another little girl Isabel Peraplana had already disappeared in the past. She goes to find her, but she does not remember anything, so she goes looking for her ex-companion Mercedes. She learns of a secret crypt under a grave in the chapel of the institute.

After further investigation, he will find out that the crypt was being used by Mr. Peraplana: he used the crypt and the girls to cover the murders of men who had begun to find out for his illicit trafficking. The Commissioner decides not to release these findings because the Peraplana are a very influential and rich family and could complicate the life of many. So the protagonist returns to the asylum and Mercedes returns to his life in a country where he was forced to stay with Peraplana, with the only consolation that all that had happened in the crypt years ago was not his fault or his friend Isabel.
