The work has been documented at Palazzo Pitti since the beginning of the eighteenth century and it is known for its second version in the Seilern collection in London, of which the Uffizi table is perhaps a derivation.

The painting of the Uffizi shows a Saint Jerome where in London there is a landscape through an open window. The composition is played along the diagonal, with the group of Our Lady with the Child guarded by St. Anthony on the right and Joseph in worship on the left, surmounted by Girolamo more in shade and slightly inferior quality.

As in other works of the time, there are sharp contrasts between colors, the restless drama, the pathetic personality of the characters, especially Giuseppe from face to face. The light lays on the figures with great freedom, highlighting the right group and posing in the background the characters on the left.
