Romanian football player of the year is a prize awarded to the best Romanian football player every football season. The prize was awarded for the first time in 1966 and has since been organized by Gazeta Sporturilor newspaper. Referred soccer players Gheorghe Hagi and Gheorghe Popescu are the record holders. They were each named six times as Romanian football player of the year. During the nineties, the prize went to Hagi of Popescu. Only Adrian Ilie in 1998 was an exception. Winners ama arrested for attempting to kill Fidel Castro, but he obtained an amnesty in 2004.
In 2005, he asked for political asylum in the United States. Venezuela and Cuba requested his extradition. They believed that the fight against terrorism from the United States does not take seriously when they themselves allow terrorists in their territory. He was indeed arrested. However, that was not because of his alleged terrorist activities, but because he had landed illegally through Mexico. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez declared that he would break diplomatic relations with the US when the US will not deliver Posada.
Posada itself has always denied involvement in the bombing of 1976. Reliability in the 1997 attacks did not deny or confirm.
