Book band by Willem Pothast for publisher Cohen and Zonen (1900)
A bookshelf design is the design of a bookshelf, the cover of a bookcase.
Certain publishers approach well-known artists and gave them assignments for tire and cover designs for editions of various kinds and also for magazines, sheet music and brochures. Particularly with the magazines are the 116 covers for Wendingen, the monthly magazine for the construction and decoration of Architectura et Amicitia (1918-1931), designed by some of the most famous Dutch artists.
About 1890, art flow came about in Europe; in France Art Nouveau, in Germany Art Nouveau, in Britain Arts and Crafts and in the Netherlands New Art called, although here the names of Art Nouveau and Art Nouveau are also built in.
In the period 1890-1906 bookbinding, book covers and dust coverings were designed by artists like Jan Toorop (1858-1928), G.W. Dijsselhof (1866-1924), C.A. Lion Cachet (1864-1945), Richard Roland Holst (1869-1938), K.P.C. the Basel (1869-1923), J.G. Veldheer (1866-1945), Theo van Hoytema (1863-1917), Antoon Derkinderen (1859-1925), R.W.P. de Vries (1874-1952), L.W.R. Wenckebach (1860-1937) and others. After that, a large number of other artists also worked as a bookbuster designer.
The first mentioned artists are mentioned in the extensive study by Ernst Braches, New Art and the Book (2003). This edition deals extensively with the Art Nouveau period. Most designs are displayed in color.
Good examples of successful book tires, designed in the period 1890-1940, are also shown in the Cover in Picture Book, published at the same-name exhibition of Rob Aardse's books at the Drents Museum in Assen. Also see Externe link
