The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is an institute of the US Department of Defense responsible for the development of military technology. DARPA's main task is the management of research funds.
DARPA was founded as the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) in 1958 in response to the Sputnik crisis, caused by the unexpected launch of the Soviet Union of the Sputnik satellite in 1957. ARPA was part of the program of the US government that prevented the United States from falling behind the Soviet Union in the field of military technology.
In 1968, DARPA (then ARPA) began with the development of ARPANET, the forerunner of the later Internet.
