Gents Ecological Center

The Gents Ecological Center, abbreviated: GEC, is a Flemish information and service center for and for organizations with ecological and social objectives. The center, founded in 1999, is run by volunteers.

The GEC provides space and facilities for organizations that pursue sustainable development, both ecologically, socially and economically. The center has two buildings in Ghent in the station district, which includes a biological eatery and tea house and an Oxfam world store.

Further, space is being leased to Gents MilieuFront, the Environment Advisory Store, Friends of the Earth, CATAP and to companies like Certisys.

The GEC is affiliated with the Bond Better Environment, Flanders Consumers Network, Network Flanders and the National Co-operative Board.

In addition, the GEC organizes information and discussion nights on social-ecological themes under the heading "To-Talk Calls." The center also publishes the annual title 'To Gecke Gentenaar of the Year' annually to a resident or organization of the city of Ghent, which has made merit on a socio-ecological level.

In 2009, Stefaan Claeys, founder and honorary president of the Gents MilieuFront (GMF), won the title. In 2010, a duo was chosen: Bea Merckx and Hermien Schoutteten, both volunteers for the "Wisselstroom project" that encourage individuals to choose green energy suppliers.

The third laureate (2011) was the initiative 'De Fietskeuken' and in 2012 Steven Vromman, the green pioneer and better known as 'Low Impact Man', fell into prices. The fifth winner of the title title (2013) was Energent, a Gents citizens initiative and a cooperative company that works on renewable energy projects. Externe link
