Joannes van Hooydonk


Joannes van Hooydonk (2 August 1782 - April 25, 1868) was a Roman Catholic and the first bishop of Breda after the Restoration of the Episcopal Hierarchy in the Netherlands in 1853.

In 1827 Van Hooydonk became apostolic vicar of Breda, then no diocese, but an apostolic vicarage. On January 18, 1842, Van Hooydonk was appointed titled bishop of Dardanus. On May 1st of that year he was devoted to bishop by Cornelius Ludovicus de Wijkerslooth. He chose as a devil: Simpliciter et confidenter (In simplicity and trust). Van Hooydonk was known for his sermons and letters in which he continually warned against the moral dangers and temptations of carnival.

With the founding of the diocese of Breda, Van Hooydonk became the first bishop. He continued until 1867, the year before his death.
