Bachofen

Johann Jakob Bachofen (Basel, December 22, 1815 - November 25, 1887) was a Swiss law historian and anthropologist. His best-known work is the book Das Mutterrecht (1861) that had a major influence on the consideration of and research into matriarchal forms of society. His view of early matriarchs was mainly supported by myth analysis and has been criticized in recent decades because of this limited underpinning. Mother Law

Bachofen divided human social history into three main periods:

Bachofen linked these phases to religious principles and gods.

The theories of Bachofen were strongly influenced by later developed theories of Friedrich Engels and Lewis Henry Morgan. People like Joseph Campbell and Erich Fromm were inspired by him. Bibliography
