The medal is awarded for "long-term co-operation to the municipal self-government" in three degrees; Gold, Silver and Bronze. Although the medal is not an order within the meaning of the Bavarian constitution and is not deemed to be publicly carried, the recipients carry a pin in the form of the medal on the lap.
