Pieter Knapen (June 10, 1959) led from 2007 to 2009 as general editor-in-chief of the Flemish Radio and Television Broadcasting. In 2009 he became strategically responsible quality assurance for the VRT and was succeeded by Liesbet Vrieleman.
Pieter Knapen studied religious studies and political and social sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven. From 1988 he worked for the VRT, first as a radio journalist. In 1992 he defeated the deployment of the UN peacekeeping force in Somalia. For years he had been interviewing and editor of Radio 1. In 2001 he became editor-in-charge of the morning news on the radio, in 2004 editor of the online editors. In 2007 he became the general editor-in-chief. In that position he also attended the Flemish Council for Journalism.
In April 2010, Knapen left the VRT. He switched to the KU Leuven, to become the director of the communications service.
In September 2013 he was fired by the KU Leuven. The communication service was also split and the director function was deleted as part of a reorganization of the rector services.
At the end of November 2013, the Flemish Agency for Educational Communication announced that Knapen will be the director of KlasCement, a Flemish educational portal site, on December 2, 2013. He follows Hans De Four.
On July 1, 2014, he becomes the new Secretary General and Ombudsman of the Journal of Journalism.
